Thrift Store Radios: Portable AM/FM Radios

In Georgia, tornado season begins in March and typically runs through May.  Although I'm not sure it's too smart to trust a weatherman in Georgia.  They don't seem very accurate to me.  You can read more about tornado season here on the Mother Nature Network.

When I peruse the thrift stores, I often come across perfectly suitable portable AM/FM radios.  They work well.  They don't have any vices other than being one-speaker mono units instead of stereo.  They are like half of a boombox!

Sometimes they have strange brand names like this $6 Pomtrex radio.

Unfortunately, I can only envision using a radio like this when you are sitting in your tub, during a power outage, waiting for a tornado to visit.  In that case, you might want a unit like this Coby AM/FM/Weather Band Receiver.  For less than $7, you can sit in an interior room of your home and wait for the wind to subside!

Radios like this prove that you don't need a lot of money to be prepared for bad weather.  All you need is some batteries!
